Sorbalgon is a wound dressing (or ribbon) consisting of calcium alginate fibres and polysorbate. In contact with sodium salts – as found in wound exudate – the alginate fibres become gelatinous creating a moist wound environment.
Intended purpose:
Sorbalgon/-T is a single use, sterile, conformable, non-medicated dressing with a non-woven structure and made of calcium alginate fibres which forms a hydrophilic non-adherent gel in contact with the sodium salts contained in wound exudate. It can be used for long-term treatment on all moderate to heavily exuding wounds by healthcare professionals.
Properties and mode of action:
The non-woven structure of the dressing combined with its physical and chemical properties result in a high absorbency – particularly important in the treatment of moderate to heavily exuding wounds. The material adapts to the contours of the wound preventing it from drying out. For the treatment of cavity wounds, Sorbalgon T ribbons are available.
Indications:
For all moderate to heavily exuding superficial or/and cavity wounds.
Mode of application:
Cleanse the wound in accordance with standard nursing practice. Apply the dressing to the wound or pack the wound with a Sorbalgon/-T ribbon and secure with a suitable secondary dressing. In case of dry wounds Sorbalgon can be moistened with Ringer’s solution. Sorbalgon may be left in-situ for extended periods (up to several days), depending on the level of wound secretion. The dressing should be changed once it has fully turned into a gel in accordance with nursing standards. Should any fibres remain in the wound, these may be easily removed by a wound irrigation solution* and are broken down naturally by the body.
